Associate Professor Mehdi Bennis elevated to IEEE Fellow

Associate professor Mehdi Bennis from the Centre for Wireless Communications has been elevated to the grade of an IEEE Fellow. The IEEE fellowship is attributed for his contributions to resource optimization in heterogeneous and low-latency wireless networks.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one- percent (0.1%) of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement. Less than 30 IEEE members of IEEE Finland Section have been elevated to the grade of Fellow. Bennis is the fifth University of Oulu alumnus receiving the recognition.

-I feel very honored and thrilled to be elevated to the IEEE Fellow class of 2021. It is a recognition by the scientific and professional community to the renowned expertise of the wireless research carried out at the Centre for Wireless Communication, at the University of Oulu.  This recognition would not be possible without all my current and previous doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, visitors and many collaborators from all around the world. Moreover, I would like to thank Professor Zhu Han from the University of Houston for nominating me.
 

Associate professor Bennis’s research has focused on the optimization of resources in the context of 4G, 5G systems and now towards 6G. In particular he has contributed to the area of self-organizing heterogeneous wireless networks by proposing fully distributed algorithms leveraging game theoretical and reinforcement learning approaches. Another significant part of his work has focused on low-latency wireless networks whereby latency is reduced by learning and predicting what contents need to be cached at the network edge (base stations and devices) before they are actually requested. Moreover, Bennis has made a significant contribution to ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC), the revolutionary part of 5G.

-My current research focus sits at the confluence of distributed machine learning and wireless communication as part of the University of Oulu 6G Flagship. The upcoming vision, called VisionX, is set to revolutionize how we communicate.
