Hirley Alves

Hirley Alves is Professor of Wireless Communications Engineering at the University of Oulu, where he develops communication methods for large numbers of connected devices and systems that must operate with exceptional speed and reliability. His research addresses a central challenge for future 6G networks: how to connect machines, sensors, and critical applications efficiently, securely, and at scale.

Alves heads the Machine-type Wireless Communications Group at the Centre for Wireless Communications and leads its research on massive connectivity, ultra-reliable low-latency communications, full-duplex communications, and physical-layer security. He also leads the machine-type and ultra-reliable low-latency communications activities within the 6G Flagship programme.

He joined the University of Oulu’s tenure track as an assistant professor in 2019, subsequently became an associate professor, and was appointed full professor on 1 August 2026. He received his BSc and MSc degrees from the Federal University of Technology – Paraná (UTFPR), Brazil, in 2010 and 2011, respectively, and a double Doctor of Science degree from UTFPR and the University of Oulu in 2015.

Alves is a co-recipient of the Best Student Paper Awards at ISWCS 2017 and EuCNC 2019 and the 2016 Research Award from the Cuban Academy of Sciences. He has served as an organiser, chair, technical programme committee member, and tutorial lecturer at several international conferences. He chairs the workshop series Full-Duplex Communications for Future Networks and has served as General Chair of ISWCS 2019, Co-General Chair of ISWCS 2021, and General Co-Chair of the first 6G Summit, held in Levi, Finland, in 2019.
