Taiwanese Delegation and 6G Flagship Focus on Future Connectivity at University of Oulu Workshop

On 12th June 2023, an expert delegation from the Taiwan National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) 6G Program Office visited the University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship. A joint workshop was organised to foster international collaboration and align research efforts in the cutting-edge 6G field.

Professor Matti Latva-aho, the director of the 6G Flagship, Prof Chih-Peng Li, the General Director of the Department of Engineering and Technologies of NSTC, and Pekka Rantala from Business Finland led the discussions. The introduction began with an explanation of the three 6G programmes: the University of Oulu’s 6G Flagship, Business Finland’s 6GBridge, and Taiwan’s 6G Programme. The aim was to clarify the strategic objectives and visions of the 6G initiatives on both sides.

The workshop focused on several key themes in 6G development, namely the future of 6G network architecture, the role of sustainability in dual-powered green cellular networks, the transformative potential of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), and advancements in higher-order MIMO systems. RIS, with its capability to manipulate electromagnetic waves, promise to reshape 6G connectivity, while the use of multiple antennas in MIMO systems promises significant improvements in communication performance.

These discussions, pivotal for the upcoming 6G era, served as a rich platform for exchanging innovative ideas and aligning research directions. They are expected to catalyse future collaborations between the 6G Flagship and the Taiwanese NSTC 6G Program Office, driving global advancements in next-generation connectivity.
