The 6G-XR Impact Day takes place on 28 October 2025 in Madrid, Spain.

Hosted at the 5TONIC – IMDEA Networks Institute, this full-day event marks the culmination of three years of research and development in extended reality (XR) over Beyond 5G and 6G infrastructures. It showcases results from the 6G-XR (6G eXperimental Research) project, an EU-funded SNS JU initiative aimed at advancing Europe’s leadership in 6G by enabling next-generation XR services and experimentation platforms.

Organised by the South Node partners of 6G-XR and the wider consortium, the event will feature demonstrations, panels, and discussions on immersive connectivity, standardisation, and the social and environmental dimensions of XR innovation in Europe.

Participants can explore live demonstrations of real-time holographic communication, interactive 3D digital twins, and energy-efficient immersive service delivery. The agenda also includes cross-sector panels on XR applications in mobility, energy, and media, along with policy and standardisation dialogues focusing on responsible AI and Europe’s digital transition.

Jussi Haapola

Representing 6G Flagship

Dr. Jussi Haapola, University of Oulu, Finland, will deliver the 6G-XR Impact Statement: Project Overview and the Road Ahead on 28 October 2025 (09:40 – 10:00 CET).
The session introduces the project’s main achievements, future directions, and its contribution to European XR and 6G innovation.

Kenichi Komatsu

6G Flagship Demonstration

Dr. Kenichi Komatsu, University of Oulu, leads the Co-creative cyber studio in a sliced 5G O-RAN network demonstration.
The showcase features a 3D digital twin Fab Lab remote work XR application under a 5G O-RAN network with a QoS measurement system.

The demonstration presents a pioneering approach to developing remote Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) environments using extended reality (XR) and 3D digital twins, enabled by cutting-edge private 5G networks. These XR Fab Labs allow multi-user remote collaboration and real-time control of R&D and manufacturing processes. Leveraging 3D digital twins and XR technologies, users can interact, review, and manipulate 3D models in a virtual space. The integration of ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and network slicing within an Open RAN-based private 5G framework ensures robust low-latency connectivity. An operational demo compared eMBB and URLLC slices under congestion, while a Quality of Experience (QoE) survey confirmed high usability and minimal perceived latency—demonstrating the feasibility of integrating XR-based digital twins with 5G slicing for remote design and manufacturing in cyber-physical spaces.
